The membrane, junction detailing and testing matter far more than the grout colour once water finds a path into the structure.
Why waterproofing is separate from tiling
Tiles, adhesive and grout are not a waterproofing system. Even quality porcelain tiles and epoxy grout have joints, penetrations and perimeter edges that can allow moisture through over time. The waterproof membrane is the continuous barrier that protects wall framing, floors, adjoining rooms and the building below.
This distinction is where many failed bathroom renovations begin. A neat tile finish can hide inadequate preparation, missed corners or membrane applied too thinly. By the time loose tiles, mould, swollen skirting or ceiling stains appear, rectification may involve demolition rather than a simple repair.
For residential bathrooms and laundries, waterproofing is generally governed by the National Construction Code requirements and the relevant Australian Standard, commonly AS 3740 for waterproofing of domestic wet areas. Balconies, podiums and other external areas may require a different approach under the AS 4654 series, as they face weather exposure, drainage demands and movement not found in an internal bathroom.
The exact requirement depends on the building type, the room layout, the state or territory, and the applicable version of the code and standards. A professional installer should assess the project rather than apply one bathroom detail to every wet area.

Standards set minimum expectations, but the practical result comes down to continuity. The membrane must connect across the floor, up required wall areas and around every point where water can enter the substrate.
Shower floors, walls and recesses
A shower is the highest-risk area in most homes. The shower floor needs waterproofing, including the floor-to-wall junctions and connection to the waste. Walls around the shower also require waterproofing to the required height and extent for the installation.
This is especially important in hobless showers. Because there is no raised hob to contain water, floor falls, drainage position and membrane detailing all need to work together. Water must drain to the waste without ponding at the entry or running into the rest of the bathroom.
A shower niche needs the same care as the main shower area. It is a recessed box with multiple internal corners, so it should be fully waterproofed before tiles are installed. This is not a place to rely on silicone and grout alone.
Bathroom and laundry floors
Wet-area floors commonly need waterproofing across the full floor area, with membrane turned up at walls and other vertical surfaces as required. Doorways need particular attention. A membrane termination that is too low, poorly bonded or interrupted by floor preparation can allow water to move into adjoining flooring.
Laundries can be overlooked because they do not always have a shower. Yet washing machine hose failures, overflowing troughs and floor cleaning can release a substantial amount of water quickly. The floor, waste location, threshold and wall junctions should be considered as one system.
Baths, vanities and plumbing penetrations
A bath area is not automatically low risk. Freestanding baths, inset baths and wall-mounted spouts all create different waterproofing details. Where a bath is set against a wall, the wall area behind and beside it may need protection based on the room design and the applicable requirements.
Every penetration through the membrane deserves close attention. Tap bodies, mixer outlets, shower rails, wastes and pipes must be sealed with compatible detailing components. Cutting holes after waterproofing without reinstating the seal is a common cause of concealed moisture damage.
Balconies and external tiled spaces
External tiling is not simply indoor tiling with a tougher tile. Balconies and terraces need a waterproofing system designed for UV exposure where relevant, thermal movement, rainwater management and drainage. Falls must direct water to compliant outlets, while movement joints need to be planned so the tile finish can move without cracking.
For balconies over occupied spaces, the consequences of failure can extend to internal ceilings, electrical fittings and multiple tenancies. Builders and strata managers should confirm the waterproofing design, substrate condition and testing process before tiles are laid.
What compliant installation looks like on site
Good waterproofing starts before the membrane is opened. The substrate must be sound, clean, dry enough for the product, and properly prepared. Cracks, loose material, uneven screeds and poorly formed falls need correction first. Applying membrane over a weak or contaminated surface does not fix the underlying problem.
The installer should use a compatible system. Primers, bond breakers, membrane, reinforcing fabric where required, sealants, adhesives and screed products should be selected to work together. Mixing products from unrelated systems can create warranty and performance issues, particularly where their curing or bonding requirements differ.
Corners, wall-to-floor junctions, sheet joins and penetrations are usually reinforced or treated with bond breakers and tapes specified by the membrane manufacturer. These details allow for small building movements while maintaining a continuous waterproof layer. They cannot be rushed or covered before the required cure time has passed.
Membrane thickness also matters. Liquid membranes are generally applied in multiple coats to achieve the manufacturer’s specified dry film thickness. One thin coat may look covered but can leave pinholes or insufficient protection. The installer should allow each coat to cure as directed, especially in cold, humid or poorly ventilated conditions.
Once waterproofing is complete, protect it. Other trades, ladders, dropped tools and premature screeding can puncture the membrane. If damage occurs, it should be repaired using the approved system before tiling proceeds.
Testing, records and sign-off
Flood testing can provide practical assurance for suitable shower bases, balconies and other contained areas before tiling. The test method, water depth, duration and approval process should suit the project requirements and local rules. It is not appropriate for every area, but where it is specified or sensible, it can reveal drainage or membrane defects while repairs are still straightforward.
For work that requires certification, retain the paperwork. This may include the waterproofing product data, photographs of the prepared substrate and membrane stages, invoices, warranties, and any compliance certificate required in your state or territory. These records are valuable for homeowners at resale and essential for builders managing defects liability and handover documentation.
Do not treat a certificate as a substitute for workmanship. Documentation should support a properly completed installation, not paper over poor falls, incomplete membrane coverage or unsuitable substrate preparation.
Questions to ask before you accept a tiling quote
A quote that only states “waterproof bathroom” leaves too much open to interpretation. Ask which rooms and surfaces are included, whether the shower walls and niche are covered, how floor falls will be corrected, and whether the membrane system is suitable for the substrate.
It is also reasonable to ask who performs the waterproofing, whether they hold the appropriate licence where licensing applies, and what records will be supplied at completion. For commercial work, clarify hold points, inspection requirements, programme allowances for curing, and responsibility for protecting completed waterproofing before the tile trade starts.
The cheapest price can become expensive if it excludes preparation, bond breaking, screeding or proper membrane application. Equally, not every project needs the same level of remedial work. A site inspection should identify the actual condition of the floor, walls, drainage and existing finishes before the scope is finalised.
When existing waterproofing needs replacement
If tiles are being removed during a bathroom renovation, assume the waterproofing must be assessed rather than automatically retained. Demolition can tear or compromise old membranes, particularly around wastes and wall junctions. Changing a shower layout, moving plumbing, installing a niche or converting to a hobless entry can also make the original system unsuitable.
Warning signs include persistent mould outside the shower, cracked grout that returns after repair, hollow tiles, lifting vinyl in an adjoining room, damaged skirting boards, and staining on the ceiling below. These signs do not prove the exact source of the leak, but they warrant investigation before cosmetic work begins.
A quality tiling project is built in layers: sound substrate, correct falls, compliant waterproofing, suitable adhesive, careful tile installation and durable finishing.
