The mix ratio has to be exact. Too much water weakens the compound and can lead to surface dusting or cracking. Too little water affects flow and finish. The product also has a working time, so the pour needs to be organised before you start. Once mixed, there is not much time to hesitate.

In larger bathrooms or commercial amenities, planning matters even more. You need enough labour on hand to mix, pour, spread, and spike-roll within the product window.

When screeding is the better approach

Where a bathroom floor needs shaped falls to a waste, a bonded screed or suitable screed system is often the more dependable method. It allows the installer to create exact gradients, manage thresholds, and prepare the floor for waterproofing with greater control.

This is especially relevant in showers, hobless entries, and renovations where floor heights are tight. A self-leveller may flatten the room, but it won’t always create the drainage profile required. Getting that wrong can affect waterproofing performance and finished usability.

The step-by-step process on site

In practical terms, the process starts with demolition and clean substrate preparation if it’s a renovation. Once the floor is exposed, the condition is checked, all loose material is removed, and the surface is mechanically prepared where required. Cracks or damaged areas are repaired first.

Next comes priming. The primer must suit both the substrate and the levelling product. After that, set heights are established. In bathrooms, those heights need to account for adjoining floor levels, waste positions, waterproofing build-up, tile thickness, and adhesive bed depth.

Then the levelling product or screed is applied. If using a compound, it is mixed and poured in sequence, then spread and finished to the required tolerance. If using screed, the installer sets rails or guides and works to the intended falls and heights. The floor is then left to cure as specified before waterproofing or tiling begins.

Rushing this part is where problems start. A floor may feel hard on top while still holding moisture or lacking full strength underneath. Tiling over it too early can trap issues into the build.
